Midori Melon Liqueur Midori is a vibrant green liqueur with a muskmelon flavor, produced by Suntory. It is manufactured in Japan, Mexico, and France, although it was produced exclusively in Japan until 1987. It was created in 1978, with a launch party held at the famous Studio 54 in New York City. The name comes from midori, the Japanese word for "green." Due to its extreme sweetness, Midori is generally used in cocktails and mixed drinks, such as the Japanese Slipper. It is often combined in long drinks with lemon-lime soda, fresh lemon juice, lime juice, pineapple juice, or orange juice. Sour flavors are often added to balance its sweetness.
